INDIANAPOLIS – The remnants of Hurricane Ike did not detour the Springs Valley Blackhawk Brigade in Indianapolis this weekend as they won the Class D competition at the Music in Motion Festival.
The Brigade also won awards for best music, marching, general effect, percussion, and guard. Overall, Springs Valley also finished as the best band at the contest, scoring the highest of all participating bands. The percussion section also had the high score of the day with the guard placing second overall.
"The performance was far from our best effort,” said Director of Bands Luke Aylsworth. “However, we will need to be more focused as we continue this season."
This was the Brigade’s first competition of the season. "It is always nice to get the first contest out of the way,” added Aylsworth. “There are a lot of unknown variables prior to the first time out. It is good to get out and see what areas we need to organize better and what sections of the performance need additional work."
For each contest the Brigade travels to, many volunteers assist in orchestrating this massive move each week. Much of this work is done by the numerous parent and other volunteers. "Again, I want to compliment our parent volunteers, boosters, drivers and staff,” stated Aylsworth. “These individuals work extremely hard in the background to get our students to and from a contest. It is simply amazing to watch their dedication and work ethic."
The Brigade will head south on US 150 to the Pride of Paoli Invitational this weekend where they will compete with the ISSMA Class C bands including Heritage Hills, Corydon, and North Harrison. They take the field at 9:08 pm with awards scheduled for 10:00 pm. Fans are encouraged to arrive early to find seats as seating will be limited. The contest has 20 bands from southern Indiana scheduled to attend.
